Psychotherapy means talking therapy. I do not prescribe medication and there is no touch involved.

It is different from a chat with a friend because I am trained to notice and understand information that is relevant to your problem. It is difficult to see yourself from an impartial standpoint and I can help you to sort through which information is relevant to your problem. I don't tell you what to do or how to live your life although we may discuss what your options are and I may make suggestions.

I will keep information you tell me confidential unless I am concerned you will hurt yourself or someone else, a severe crime has been committed or I am required to by a court of law. I am in supervision which means I discuss my work on a no names basis with my supervisor. I don't discuss our work with anyone else unless you give me permission.

I help people explore their problems, understand what causes them and change their behaviour.

I do this by:

Exploration: We look at your background including when the problem started, what was happening at the time and how it affects you.

Identification: I help you to identify unhelpful thoughts, ideas and patterns. This may be your critical inner voice, the fact that you can't make decisions or certain feelings that you find difficult to tolerate.

Raising Awareness: I raise awareness of your triggers and events leading up to experiences that you find difficult. This helps you to understand when you are likely to have difficulties. We develop coping strategies for when you are triggered or feel unable to manage.

Psychoeducation: I give information on the reasons for depression, anxiety, panic attacks, low self esteem and self harming behaviours. We talk about the causes of these issues and what purpose they serve.

Validation: Your experience can never be wrong because it's yours. I'm happy to sit alongside you however you feel. You cannot be too quiet, too talkative, too difficult, too stubborn or too lost for psychotherapy. You are free to cry, or not, and you can tell me as much or as little as you feel able to.

Reliability: If you haven't had a reliable figure in your past, you may find it difficult to trust. It's my job to point out things other people may not in a non shaming way. I won't expect you to trust me straight away; you can go at your own pace.

You might know what's wrong but don't know how to fix it. I know what to look for, where to start, and what to watch out for. I can help you to identify and express yourself so that you are able to get your needs met and communicate better in your relationships. I can help you to identify which areas to focus on and what to do so that you are better able to support yourself and ask for assistance when you need it.
